A monumentalidade do Oxford Dictionary of Quotations encontra, nesta luxuosa edição publicada pela Oxford University Press, uma de suas expressões mais cuidadosas, em versões revistas e ampliadas na década de 1990. Reunida em três volumes — Quotations (Vol. I), Proverbs (Vol. II) e Word Origins (Vol. III) —, a coleção combina a tradição erudita da Universidade de Oxford com o rigor editorial que consagrou a instituição como referência mundial em lexicografia. Cada tomo traz não apenas a riqueza de citações, provérbios e etimologias acumuladas ao longo de séculos, mas também o aparato crítico que guia o leitor no uso atento e prazeroso da língua inglesa, percorrendo desde Shakespeare até expressões populares fixadas no imaginário coletivo.
O Volume I – The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Quotations apresenta uma vasta seleção de citações de autores clássicos e modernos, com destaque especial para Shakespeare. Ali encontramos trechos célebres, como no discurso de Henry V, que exemplifica a força poética e a permanência cultural de suas palavras:
« And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile

O Volume II – The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs organiza de forma alfabética provérbios tradicionais, oferecendo sua história, variantes e usos documentados ao longo dos séculos. Em sua riqueza, permite observar a sabedoria proverbial inglesa em desenvolvimento. No verbete lie, por exemplo, encontramos um provérbio que ilustra como ditos populares atravessam gerações e ainda encontram ressonância atual:
« If you lie down with dogs, you will get up with fleas.
An assertion that human failings, such as dishonesty and foolishness, are contagious.

Já o Volume III – The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Word Origins explora a etimologia de milhares de palavras do inglês, explicando seus percursos desde o grego, latim, francês e outras línguas até o uso moderno. O verbete paradise traz um exemplo notável da riqueza etimológica:
« paradise garden of Eden; Heaven xii; paradisaical place or state xiii; park, pleasure-ground; (after Luke 23: 43, etc.) the Intermediate State xvii. ME. paradis, also parais (xii–xv) – (O)F. paradis, also in semi-pop. form parais – ChrL. paradīsus – Gr. parádeisos, first used of the parks of Persian kings and nobles, (hence) garden, orchard, in LXX and N.T. Assim, os três volumes oferecem, em conjunto, um panorama abrangente: citações literárias, provérbios tradicionais e as origens das palavras, compondo uma verdadeira biblioteca portátil da sabedoria, da cultura e da língua inglesa.
Os exemplares estão muito bem preservados: capas duras vermelhas com detalhes dourados bem conservados, lombadas firmes e páginas limpas, sem sinais de uso intenso. Acompanha box rígido, em igual tom vermelho, também ornamentado em dourado e em ótimo estado de conservação, apresentando apenas um leve amassado na extremidade superior, que também se reflete discretamente na capa anterior do volume III — detalhe quase imperceptível, sem comprometer a integridade da encadernação ou a estética do conjunto. Miolos íntegros, firmes e limpos. Cortes uniformes e limpos. Sem assinaturas, marcações ou carimbos. 1998.
